Road Trip

Road Trip

Danette McMahon

Won’t you travel down the road with me
There’s so many we can see
Highways, byways, down the dusty roads
Forget about your 9-5
Pack your bags let’s go

We can stand along the ocean shore
We can hop a boat if you want more
Hi tide, low tide, we can watch the waves roll in
Then we’re back behind the wheel
And on the road again

Chorus:
Road trip, why don’t you travel with me
Side by side, say that you’ll be with me
Rain, sleet, hail or snow
I want you with me when I go

Road trip, there’s no need to hurry
Leave your watch at home—No time to worry
Across the land, from sea to sea
It’s road trip baby just you and me

Park awhile and watch the setting sun
Looking back on all that we have done
Moon is full the stars shining clear and bright
Who knows where we will be
This time tomorrow night

Chorus:
Road trip, why don’t you travel with me
Side by side, say that you’ll be with me
Rain, sleet, hail or snow
I want you with me when I go

Road trip, there’s no need to hurry
Leave your watch at home—No time to worry
Across the land, from sea to sea
It’s road trip baby just you and me

Story

In the late 90s and early 2000s, I was a part time RVer…spending months traveling in a home on wheels!  The memories of that lifestyle were the source for this simple little swing tune!

I was blessed to experience some of the most beautiful places in the US and travel up into Canada.  Sometimes, arriving later in the evening to a park and settle in, I wasn’t quite sure what vista would be greeting in the morning!  That inspired the lyrics “Who knows where we will be this time tomorrow night”!

From the earliest conception of Road Trip, I always heard a Manhattan Transfer harmony on the chorus.  One day, during my lesson at school, Joe LoCascio quickly transcribed what I wanted to hear and the song was finally recorded 15 years later!

Fortunately, my RVing experience wasn’t quite like what Robin Williams went through, in the movie RV!  Now, that could have led to some real crazy lyrics!
